Vastu Shastra is an ancient Vedic science of architecture that understands the linkages between human life, cosmic energy of celestial bodies, gravitational and electromagnetic forces of the earth, structural orientation of the building , and the five great elements: earth, water, fire, air, and space. According to ancient legends, a cosmic clash unfolded between Lord Shiva and the fierce demon Andaksur. During this epic battle, a single droplet of Shiva’s sweat transformed into Vastu Purusha. This enigmatic being, driven by an unending hunger and chaos, grew uncontrollably, disrupting the 5 great elements. To restore order, a gathering of divine forces, led by Brahma, united their efforts. Together, they harnessed the power of the eight cardinal directions to subdue Vastu Purusha. They pinned him down with his head facing northeast and feet pointing southwest. In this position, he gained enlightenment. It is believed that these celestial beings maintain their positions on him, with 45 energy centres embedded in Earth. Among them, 32 outer deities and 13 inner ones influence various aspects of human life. Spread across the Vastu Purusha Mandala, these energy centres guide the practice of Vastu Shastra. Through Vastu has also emerged the much-applauded branch of Feng Shui ( means Wind and Water and pronounced “fung shway”).
The true goal of Vastu is not merely constructing habitable dwellings but also realizing and executing the purpose of its occupants. Vastu Shastra, at its core, orchestrates the symphony of energy within a space. It is a realm where science embraces spirituality to forge a path to prosperity and abundance.
This architectural knowledge seeks to revitalise both mind and body through powerful networks of solar and geomagnetic energy while aligning one’s breath with that of the universe.
In the past, structures aligned with Vastu principles allowed them to manifest the desires of its owners, but today’s unplanned and chaotic constructions often disregard both nature and tradition. In these irregular structures, accommodating Vastu Purusha’s form becomes a challenge, resulting in disharmony and various problems for its inhabitants.
The very essence of Vastu lies in the understanding that the shape of a structure is of paramount importance for energy flow. Square or rectangular shapes are often deemed ideal while triangular or odd shapes with missing corners are not. However, it is the proportion that has a profound impact on the experience of the residents.
Orientation is the magnetic compass that guides the flow of energy within a structure. It holds the power to either energize or depress the inhabitants, influencing their wish fulfilment. It is the orientation that aligns a structure with the surrounding terrain, the Earth’s magnetic axis, and its geographic location. If it is a house then it is crucial to consider the orientation of the entire house rather than individual rooms, as each structure has only one true north, south, east, and west.
The surroundings in which a building stands play a significant role in shaping its energy flow. Positive surroundings facilitate the fulfilment of aspirations, while negative ones obstruct progress. Imagine a building surrounded by imposing mountains, tall trees, heavy storage areas, or a large overhead water tank in its northern direction. Such contrary elements restrict opportunities for wealth creation and progress. Similarly, deep water bodies in the south or southeast can bring about stress and strife in life.
To maximize well-being and success, we must understand and respect the earth energy of the land on which our structures stand. Different regions possess varying levels of mineral deposits in the soil, which can impact health and prosperity over a period of time. Excessive iron in the soil may prove toxic to agriculture or (health of your garden), leading to liver, heart, and pancreatic issues if the water source is located in such soil. Moreover, specific soil types require careful foundation design and construction to avoid structural damage.
To invite positive energy into a building, it is essential to place activities, colors, and objects in appropriate zones. The 16 zones in Vastu correspond to different aspects of our lives, such as health, happiness, wealth, social connectivity, education, and relationships. By respecting these zones, we create balanced and harmonious spaces that nurture our overall well-being.
Remember, Vastu is not a one-size-fits-all concept. Your location on planet Earth plays a pivotal role in determining the nuances of Vastu. Vastu principles for Australia differ from those in Canada, just as those for the hot Middle East differ from rain-soaked Singapore. Consider the seasonal variations, prevailing winds, and duration of available sunlight when applying Vastu concepts to different regions.
If one is burdened with setbacks, it is worthwhile to check if the cause lies undetected in your dwelling. The change for the worse may take place after a renovation or moving to a new place. Or fortunes may decline after a new building comes up nearby. Sometimes wrong choice of colors within the building or merely the incorrect placement of certain items can cause much grief but can also be easily rectified. Severe faults such as wrong location of large waterbodies, entrance door, kitchen stove, majority of windows, toilet, landscaping, slope of the land etc,. will need stronger intervention and specialized treatment for lasting relief. Equally important to note is that the same structure can treat its new occupants differently compared to those who came before or after.
